At least 13 passengers lose their lives and ninety-eight hurt in train derailment in Mexico.

A tragic railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel censure from critics regarding the pace and execution of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.

The crash happened on the Interoceanic Train, a line built to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.

“We are going to thoroughly investigate what caused this accident,” affirmed the country's president.

The official announced that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The president added plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.

Key Undertaking of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the immediate past president, whose time in office ended the previous year. This venture was a hallmark of his administration's economic goals for the southeastern region.

Another ambitious rail project from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to kickstart the economy of a relatively poorer part of the country.

Building Management and Safety Concerns

The development of both rail lines was supervised by the armed forces, marking a notable growth of its role in public works. They were built at an fast-tracked pace, surpassing forecasts to be partially inaugurated before the end of that administration.

However, this rushed timetable had also fueled significant questions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This involves an earlier collision this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen several non-lethal derailments.

Demands for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the disaster, the chief of a key rival party demanded an urgent halt in the building and running of all comparable projects.

This stoppage was requested while awaiting a full technical review. The party emphasized that the tragedy "demands prompt explanations."

In response, the head of state maintained that the train had been operating in total adherence to all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the development and operation of these national initiatives.
