Zak Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Comments

England opening batter Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of statements from captain Ben Stokes regarding the dressing room not being "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes delivered this message in several interviews in the wake of England's defeat in the second Ashes series versus Australia previously.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where the visitors now face a series loss with a match to spare, Stokes noted he had let his message to "drift around" within the squad.

"I have completed the necessary discussions over the past two days that I required," remarked the England leader.

But, following the opener scored a knock of 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take anything stated in the press with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

The captain made the "weak men" comment after England were beaten in Brisbane to fall two matches behind.

The team afterwards went on a break to Noosa in the gap between the second and the upcoming matches.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, Stokes revealed his players had held "honest" talks and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their battle to stay alive in the Ashes battle.

Yet, Crawley asserted the messaging from Stokes and head coach McCullum had remained in line with their prior three years in charge.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, the same as always," noted Crawley. "It's just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. It felt like we could do something special going into this Test."

Australia On the Verge of Historic Ashes Triumph

The opener's dismissal late on Saturday was part of a decisive three-wicket burst by Australia off-spinner Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in a short spell – he also bowled Brook and Stokes himself – left England 207-6 chasing a daunting total of 435 runs.

Consequently, Australia need just four more wickets on Sunday's last day to move to an unassailable 3-0 lead after three Tests.

A loss will extend the English team's drought in this country to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth successive overseas Ashes series defeat.

This series will be completed in just 11 days of cricket – after England fell the initial matches in two and four days each.

The last time 1921, when Australia sealed a series win in England in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been determined so quickly. Australia have also won in 11 days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"It's disheartening," said the batsman. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and we're facing elimination now."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we will certainly approach it like that," he continued.

"The challenge has been tough. They're a very, very good side. It was always going to be tough touring here against them. They entered as the favourites coming in to it they've proven why."

Pope's Place In Question

Although Crawley's innings in the third Test likely secures doubts about his immediate place in the England team, Ollie Pope appears under threat for his spot in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

Pope fell for 17 runs in the team's second innings on Saturday, adding to his modest returns versus the old enemy.

In 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has failed to score a half-century and averages just 17.62.

Only one other England player since 1900 – Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top six in Ashes Tests and recorded a poorer average.

But, the opener said any suggestion his teammate is being scrutinised originates with "the media" – referring to the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"We all know of his considerable talent," said he. "He has had a good year if I'm honest."

"He has produced several excellent innings. It is talk externally. There's no chat of that nature on Ollie amongst the players," he concluded.
